Employment Programme

Getting a job can be tough. It’s even tougher when the hiring process isn’t inclusive and doesn’t adapt to different individuals’ needs. At Fair Shot we created our bespoke Employment Programme - an initiative designed to make the hiring process as easy as possible for someone with a learning disability.

Our Employment Programme is a follow-on from our Supported Internship Programme. It makes it simple for both like-minded employers to hire someone who will fit smoothly into the day-to-day running of their business, but also makes it simple for our graduates to slide right into that role.

 FAQs

  • We believe that the skills our learners develop from our Supported Internship Programme are true life skills, which are transferable across sectors.

Our graduates have gone on to fill a wide range of roles, predominantly in the hospitality industry. Some graduates have gone on to be Speciality Coffee Baristas, while others have gone on to be Commis Chefs, Hotel Hosts and Office Managers.

  • Yes, plenty! We believe for employment to be successful, it must be sustainable.

    We offer:

    • A Step-by-Step Guide for navigating the transition process

    • 1-1 support from a Job Coach for graduates and employers alike

    • DEI Workshops for Employers to know how to be inclusive

    • Disability Awareness Training Materials for you and all your team

    • Networking Opportunities with other Fair Shot Employers

    • Well-being & Mental Health Workshops for programme graduates and employers

  • Instead of fitting a person into a rigid job description, it can be much more effective to identify different tasks that a person with a learning disability can do, and 'carve' out a job from these different tasks.

We find that this approach ensures that every employee gets the most out of their new paid employment, and similarly, the employer is happy with their new employee.

  • It completely depends on the individual and their wants and needs. The majority of our graduates so far have started working 16 hours a week, at least until the probation period is over.

Typically about halfway into the Supported Internship Programme, we’ll have a meeting with our learners and their families to discuss how things are going, the next steps, & what kind of employment they are interested in. During this chat, we’ll outline roughly how many hours a week, for how many hours a day etc seems ideal and we go to our partnered employers with these guidelines.

That being said, we’ve found from past experiences that starting with fewer hours works better. Then once our graduates gain confidence in their new work environment, a discussion about increasing hours is possible!

  • We work on a voluntary donation basis which can be made in many different ways, depending on what each company can provide. In the past, some employers have opted to set up a customer tap-to-donate box by their till or have added a donation at the end of customers’ tab.

This donation helps us to keep the programme alive and provide better services. We are also unable to adapt materials or provide workshops to employers for free, as these bare additional costs on our end.

*Please keep in mind that Safeguarding Adults & DBS Check is a legal requirement to work with adults at risk, and it has a price per person which is not included in our donation. We do offer, however, support in this application process and have a discount offer with our supplier iHasco.
